(Read Pilate Part 1 First)

  • "But if I release Barabbas," Pilate asked them, "what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?" And they all shouted, "Crucify him!" - Matthew 27:22


  • "Why?" Pilate demanded. "What crime has he committed?" But the crowd only roared the louder, "Crucify him!" - Matthew 27:23


  • Pilate saw that he wasn't getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this man. The responsibility is yours!" - Matthew 27:24


  • So Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to crucify him. - Matthew 27:26


  • went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. And Pilate issued an order to release it to him. - Matthew 27:58


  • The next day--on the first day of the Passover ceremonies*--the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate.7 - Matthew 27:62


  • Pilate replied, "Take guards and secure it the best you can." - Matthew 27:65


  • Very early in the morning the leading priests, other leaders, and teachers of religious law--the entire high council*--met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.1 - Mark 15:1


  • Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "Yes, it is as you say." - Mark 15:2


  • and Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to say something? What about all these charges against you?" - Mark 15:4


  • But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate's surprise. - Mark 15:5


  • The mob began to crowd in toward Pilate, asking him to release a prisoner as usual. - Mark 15:8


  • "Should I give you the King of the Jews?" Pilate asked. - Mark 15:9


  • "But if I release Barabbas," Pilate asked them, "what should I do with this man you call the King of the Jews?" - Mark 15:12


  • "Why?" Pilate demanded. "What crime has he committed?" But the crowd only roared the louder, "Crucify him!" - Mark 15:14


  • So Pilate, anxious to please the crowd, released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to crucify him. - Mark 15:15


  • an honored member of the high council, Joseph from Arimathea (who was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come), gathered his courage and went to Pilate to ask for Jesus' body. - Mark 15:43
