(Read Jerusalem Part 1 First)

  • Within three days, all the people of Judah and Benjamin had gathered in Jerusalem. This took place on December 19,* and all the people were sitting in the square before the Temple of God. They were trembling both because of the seriousness of the matter and because it was raining.2 - Ezra 10:9


  • Hanani, one of my brothers, came to visit me with some other men who had just arrived from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had survived the captivity and about how things were going in Jerusalem. - Nehemiah 1:2


  • They said to me, "Things are not going well for those who returned to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been torn down, and the gates have been burned." - Nehemiah 1:3


  • Three days after my arrival at Jerusalem, - Nehemiah 2:11


  • I slipped out during the night, taking only a few others with me. I had not told anyone about the plans God had put in my heart for Jerusalem. We took no pack animals with us, except the donkey that I myself was riding. - Nehemiah 2:12


  • But now I said to them, "You know full well the tragedy of our city. It lies in ruins, and its gates are burned. Let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem and rid ourselves of this disgrace!" - Nehemiah 2:17


  • But I replied, "The God of heaven will help us succeed. We his servants will start rebuilding this wall. But you have no stake or claim in Jerusalem." - Nehemiah 2:20


  • Next was Uzziel son of Harhaiah, a goldsmith by trade, who also worked on the wall. Beyond him was Hananiah, a manufacturer of perfumes. They left out* a section of Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall.2 - Nehemiah 3:8


  • Rephaiah son of Hur, the leader of half the district of Jerusalem, was next to them on the wall. - Nehemiah 3:9


  • Shallum son of Hallohesh and his daughters repaired the next section. He was the leader of the other half of the district of Jerusalem. - Nehemiah 3:12


  • They all made plans to come and fight against Jerusalem and to bring about confusion there. - Nehemiah 4:8


  • I also told everyone living outside the walls to move into Jerusalem. That way they and their servants could go on guard duty at night as well as work during the day. - Nehemiah 4:22


  • He also reports that you have appointed prophets to prophesy about you in Jerusalem, saying, `Look! There is a king in Judah!' "You can be very sure that this report will get back to the king, so I suggest that you come and talk it over with me." - Nehemiah 6:7


  • I gave the responsibility of governing Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, for he was a faithful man who feared God more than most. - Nehemiah 7:2


  • I said to them, "Do not leave the gates open during the hottest part of the day.* And while the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut and bar the doors. Appoint the residents of Jerusalem to act as guards, everyone on a regular watch. Some will serve at their regular posts and some in front of their own homes."1 - Nehemiah 7:3


  • "Here is the list of the Jewish exiles of the provinces who returned from their captivity to Jerusalem and to the other towns of Judah. They had been deported to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar. - Nehemiah 7:6


  • "Another group returned to Jerusalem at this time from the towns of Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Kerub, Addan,* and Immer. However, they could not prove that they or their families were descendants of Israel.13 - Nehemiah 7:61
