(Read Council Part 1 First)

  • At this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them. - Acts 5:33

  • But one member had a different perspective. He was a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert on religious law and was very popular with the people. He stood up and ordered that the apostles be sent outside the council chamber for a while. - Acts 5:34

  • The council accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go. - Acts 5:40

  • The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Jesus. - Acts 5:41

  • Naturally, this roused the crowds, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.*2 - Acts 6:12

  • At this point everyone in the council stared at Stephen because his face became as bright as an angel's. - Acts 6:15

  • Not finding them there, they dragged out Jason and some of the other believers* instead and took them before the city council. "Paul and Silas have turned the rest of the world upside down, and now they are here disturbing our city," they shouted.3 - Acts 17:6

  • Then they took him to the Council of Philosophers.* "Come and tell us more about this new religion," they said.4 - Acts 17:19

  • So Paul, standing before the Council,* addressed them as follows: "Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious,5 - Acts 17:22

  • but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the Council,* a woman named Damaris, and others.2 - Acts 17:34

  • The high priest and the whole council of leaders can testify that this is so. For I received letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the Christians from there to Jerusalem, in chains, to be punished. - Acts 22:5
