(Read Cities Part 1 First)

  • So I'm asking you to give me the hill country that the LORD promised me. You will remember that as scouts we found the Anakites living there in great, walled cities. But if the LORD is with me, I will drive them out of the land, just as the LORD said." - Joshua 14:12


  • The fortified cities included in this territory were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Kinnereth, - Joshua 19:35


  • Yiron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh--nineteen cities with their surrounding villages. - Joshua 19:38


  • "Now tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed Moses. - Joshua 20:2


  • Anyone who kills another person unintentionally can run to one of these cities and be protected from the relatives of the one who was killed, for the relatives may seek to avenge the killing. - Joshua 20:3


  • "Upon reaching one of these cities, the one who caused the accidental death will appear before the leaders at the city gate and explain what happened. They must allow the accused to enter the city and live there among them. - Joshua 20:4


  • The following cities were designated as cities of refuge: Kedesh of Galilee, in the hill country of Naphtali; Shechem, in the hill country of Ephraim; and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), in the hill country of Judah. - Joshua 20:7


  • On the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho, the following cities were designated as cities of refuge: Bezer, in the wilderness plain of the tribe of Reuben; Ramoth in Gilead, in the territory of the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, in the land of the tribe of Manasseh. - Joshua 20:8


  • These cities were set apart for Israelites as well as the foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed another person could take refuge in one of these cities. In this way, they could escape being killed in revenge prior to standing trial before the community. - Joshua 20:9


  • The clan of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. - Joshua 21:7

  • The five gold rats represented the five Philistine cities and their surrounding villages, which were controlled by the five rulers. The large rock at Beth-shemesh, where they set the Ark of the LORD, still stands in the field of Joshua as a reminder of what happened there. - 1 Samuel 6:18

  • Be courageous! Let us fight bravely to save our people and the cities of our God. May the LORD's will be done." - 2 Samuel 10:12
