- and in due time she gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,* for she said, "I asked the LORD for him."6 - 1 Samuel 1:20
- Then Elkanah and Hannah returned home to Ramah without Samuel. And the boy became the LORD's helper, for he assisted Eli the priest. - 1 Samuel 2:11
- Now Samuel, though only a boy, was the LORD's helper. He wore a linen tunic just like that of a priest.*1 - 1 Samuel 2:18
- And the LORD gave Hannah three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD. - 1 Samuel 2:21

- Meanwhile, the boy Samuel was serving the LORD by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from the LORD were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon. - 1 Samuel 3:1
- The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle* near the Ark of God.1 - 1 Samuel 3:3
- Suddenly, the LORD called out, "Samuel! Samuel!" "Yes?" Samuel replied. "What is it?" - 1 Samuel 3:4
- Then the LORD called out again, "Samuel!" Again Samuel jumped up and ran to Eli. "Here I am," he said. "What do you need?" "I didn't call you, my son," Eli said. "Go on back to bed." - 1 Samuel 3:6
- Samuel did not yet know the LORD because he had never had a message from the LORD before. - 1 Samuel 3:7
- So now the LORD called a third time, and once more Samuel jumped up and ran to Eli. "Here I am," he said. "What do you need?" Then Eli realized it was the LORD who was calling the boy. - 1 Samuel 3:8
- So he said to Samuel, "Go and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, `Yes, LORD, your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went back to bed. - 1 Samuel 3:9
- And the LORD came and called as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel replied, "Yes, your servant is listening." - 1 Samuel 3:10
- Then the LORD said to Samuel, "I am about to do a shocking thing in Israel. - 1 Samuel 3:11
- Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then got up and opened the doors of the Tabernacle* as usual. He was afraid to tell Eli what the LORD had said to him.3 - 1 Samuel 3:15
