Bible Help - Understanding the Bible
Need Bible help? You've come to the right place! GotQuestions.org is here to help you and answer your questions! God wants you to be able to understand the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." The Holy Spirit, who lives inside of all Christians, promises to help you understand God's Word. John 14:26 declares, "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." Remember, God is the ultimate author of the Bible - and the best way to understand a book is to ask the author. God promises to give wisdom to anyone who asks. James 1:5 proclaims, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."

Bible Help - The Tools of the Trade
When looking for Bible help, should we use tools outside the Bible itself? Even though we have everything we need to understand the Bible for ourselves, it's foolish to ignore the research and teaching of other godly Christian men and women, like the helpful people at GotQuestions.org. God has equipped certain individuals with a gifting for teaching God's Word in a manner that is accurate and easy to understand (Romans 12:6-7; Ephesians 4:11-13). It can be a tremendous help in understanding the Bible to own a Bible dictionary, a good study Bible and/or a quality Bible commentary.

A Bible Dictionary is just like a normal dictionary except that it specifically defines words according to their meaning in the Bible. We recommend the following Bible dictionaries:

Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary
The New Unger's Bible Dictionary
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary
Baker Theological Dictionary of the Bible

A Study Bible is simply a Bible which contains charts, study notes, and helps. We recommend the following study Bibles:

The Quest Study Bible
The Ryrie Study Bible
The MacArthur Study Bible
The NIV Study Bible
The KJV Study Bible
The NAS Study Bible

A Bible Commentary is a book which gives an explanation of the meaning of a verse or passage of Scripture. There are commentaries available for individual books of the Bible, groups of books of the Bible, or the entire Bible. There are commentaries written on a very simple level and commentaries written on a very scholarly level. We recommend the following Bible commentaries:

The Bible Knowledge Commentary
The New International Bible Commentary
The NIV Bible Commentary
The Holman Commentary Series
The NIV Application Commentary Series
