Immutability of God

Immutability of God - What is it?
The Immutability of God is the principle that God does not change. He is the same today as He was a thousand years ago. God’s nature does not change, nor does His character or attributes. When something changes, it is made better, worse, or different. But because God is perfect, He cannot be made better or develop into a holier being. There is no need for Him to change.

Immutability of God - Why is it important?
The Immutability of God is important because it assures us of God’s role in our lives:
  • We can be sure of who God is. He is our holy, eternal Father, just as He has been to His people since the beginning of the world. 1 Samuel 2:2 says, “There is no one holy like the LORD...” and in Psalm 90:2 we read, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

  • We can be sure God loves us. God’s love for us is constant and sure. 1 Chronicles 16:34 tells us His love is never ending: “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” And we are assured in Romans 8:38-39 that nothing can separate us from His love. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  • We can be sure God will sustain us in hard times. He will not leave us alone, but will guide us through troubles that are sure to come our way. Psalm 4:8 says, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” This is a wonderful picture of God’s sustaining comfort—having the peace to lie down and sleep during difficult times. And there is no problem too big for God, as we read in Psalm 147:5, “Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.”

  • We can be sure of God’s plan for our lives. God cares about each of us as an individual. He wants the best for us and wants to lead us in the path of His perfect will, which begins with asking Him to come into our lives and forgive us of our sins. God, who is perfect, cannot look on sin. He has made provision for dealing with sin in our lives through the death, burial, and resurrection of His only son, Jesus Christ. And that plan has never changed. 1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
Immutability of God - Conclusion
The Immutability of God gives us comfort and security in who we are and who God is. Knowing God does not change provides us with a spiritual and moral anchor in a rapidly changing culture. When we are pulled in many directions and are searching for answers, we can know that God is constant, dependable, and faithful to help us when we ask.

One insurance company in the United States of America uses an image of the Rock of Gibraltar to illustrate the solidity and stable condition of their firm. This Rock is a huge, imposing boulder jutting out of the ocean at Spain’s southern tip. Come what may, it does not change. After centuries of hot summers, freezing winters, and severe storms, the Rock of Gibraltar still stands. God is our Rock. His character, His love for us and His faithfulness to us will never change.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.

What is your response?
