Christian Doctrine According to Bono

QUESTION: Christian Doctrine According to Bono

ANSWER:

Bono, the singer-songwriter for the monster-selling rock group, U2, was the son of a Protestant father and Catholic mother in Ireland—a country at battle over religion during his entire youth. In a 2006 speech before Christians, Muslims, and Jews in Washington, DC, Bono shared, “One of the things that I picked up from my father and mother was the sense that religion often gets in the way of God.”
“Seeing what religious people, in the name of God, did to my native land...and in this country; seeing God’s second-hand car salesmen on the cable TV channels...seeing the self-righteousness roll down like a mighty stream from certain corners of the religious establishment – I must confess, I changed the channel. I wanted my MTV.

“Even though I was a believer. Perhaps because I was a believer. I was cynical… not about God, but about God’s politics.”
Christian Doctrine is All About God’s Grace
So, what does Bono believe in? What is Christian Doctrine according to Bono?

In an interview with Michka Assayas (Bono: In Conversation, 2005), Bono made his “non-religion” very clear:
“At the center of all religions is the idea of Karma. You know, what you put out comes back to you: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, or in physics – every action is met by an equal or opposite one.

“And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that… Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff.

“I’d be in big trouble if Karma was going to finally be my judge. It doesn’t excuse my mistakes, but I’m holding out for Grace. I’m holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don’t have to depend on my own religiosity.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.

What is your response?

Yes, today I am deciding to follow Jesus

Yes, I am already a follower of Jesus
